You make the tips of your skis touch in front of you, creating a V as you go downhill. Pigeon toes. Going up hills you do the opposite, and you dig the instep side of your skis into the snow to get a bit of a grip. You're walking duck-footed with giant clown shoes. That takes practice too, and it's a challenge to get the gait going without tangling your skis. The trick is not to stop until you get to the top of the hill. If you stop, your skis want to slide backwards a bit and they'll tangle. Steering is an option you need to kinda on the edge of the skiis as you scuff them along to get them to turn. Think of the skis as mini toboggans. Practice and you'll get it :) It's really fun once you get going, and a LOT faster than snow shoes or trudging along a trail. It's great exercise.
